region until the establishment of the Muslim power
towards the end of the 10th century. The Brahmanization
of the area, achieved in Gandhāra as early as the 6th
century and already started in easternAfghanistan under
the previous dynasty of the Tūrkī Ṣāhīs, who were
originally pro-Buddhists, thus proceeded quickly, and no
trace of Buddhism remained. The images from the Tūrkī
Ṣāhī period, in white marble (a material alien to local
traditions), were replaced by a production obtained from
the local marble and the traditional schist. Fragment
MO201 is part of a large stele portrayingViṣṇu and, more
specifically, it features Gadādevī, the personification of
the offence weapon – a heavy mace – that the God holds
in his lower right hand (her left pendant is Cakrapuruṣa,
the personification of
cakra
, the sharp disc to throw at
enemies that the God holds with his lower left hand).
Images of the 9th century are attested in which the
personifications of these attributes, the
āyudhapuruṣas
,
pay homage to the God by shaking the flabellum, as is the
case of the
devī
in this fragment.
MO200 and MO201 are a stele fragment and a frame
fragment, respectively. They are made of black schist and
datable to the 10th century, a time of massive
reorganizing effort by the Oḍ Ṣāhīs, attested by the
building of new temples or the restructuring of older
shrines in the Salt Range on the left bank of the Indus, in
Pakistan. Another stone temple, also datable to the 10th
century, whose lost fragments are documented only by a
few drawings, arose at Chiga Sarai in Kunar, currently a
province of Afghanistan on the Pakistan border.
Despite the intensity of the Islamic military offensive,
the Ṣāhīs remained in possession of the region for a
long time. In 869-70, Ya‘qūb b. Layṯ deconsecrated the
great Kabul temple where the Ṣāhī kings were crowned,
sending the statues of the Brahmanical gods as trophies
to Baghdad, but after a few years the Ṣāhīs took back
the city and kept ruling the region, although paying a
regione fino all’installarsi del potere musulmano verso
riva sinistra dell’Indo, in Pakistan.
Nonostante l’intensità dell’offensiva militare islamica,
