tribute. In Gandhāra, on the Indus, rose the other Ṣāhī
capital city, Udabhāṇḍa/Hund. The dynasty’s crisis
became irreversible only after the battle that, in 988,
marked the establishment of the Ghaznavid rule: the
army of the Ṣāhī king Jayapāla was defeated by
Sabuktigīn, and afterwards by Maḥmūd of Ġaznī. King
Jayapāla immolated himself on a pyre in 1002.
Miniature stūpa
(MO203)
Unbaked clay.
Ġ
aznī; 8th century.
The top, wooden section (
harmikā
and parasol) is missing.
The small votive stūpa makes one piece with a smoothed clay
block in the shape of a reversed truncated cone which served
as a support. The actual stūpa rests on a base of lotus petals
and is star-shaped, after models attested in the 8th century at
Tapa Sardār (eastern side of
pradakṣināpatha
), Taxila (stūpa
of Bhamala) and in the great sites of Bihar and Bengal
(Lauriya Nandangarh, Antichak/Vikramaśīla, etc.). The four
stairs in the lower body are meant as arranged at the cardinal
points, and they identify it as a ‘stūpa of the descent’: from
them, and from their implicit multiplication in the other
points of the space, the Buddhas descend to Earth for salvific
ends. On the
aṇḍa
, the hemispheric part of the stūpa, a hole
is observable in which the wooden
harmikā
and parasol were
inserted. The stūpa contains, inside, a circular plaquette, also
made of unbaked clay, on which is impressed the Buddhist
profession of faith. This stūpa has probably the same origin
as a group of votive stūpas and plaquettes which came
accidentally to light in 1968 at Gudūl-i Āhangarān, at short
distance from the citadel of Ġaznī. Similar votive stūpas have
been also found at Hund in Gandhāra.

Fragment of a Viṣṇu stele with Gadādevī
(MO202)
Coarse-grained marble.
Southeastern Afghanistan, probably Tagāo; 9th century.
The Gadādevī figure is broken at the ankle level, and the
pur pagando tributo.
nell’anno 1002.
Stūpa in miniatura
(MO203)
Argilla cruda.
Ġ
aznī
;
VIII secolo.
Manca la parte sommitale (
harmikā
e ombrello) in legno.
),
Sull’
e ombrello, in legno.
