the inscription executed along the wall: this is possibly
a way for the potter to further specify his style, maybe
to the point of turning it into his own signature.

Quite a few samples are then decorated, along the rim,
with perfectly decipherable Kufic or cursive inscriptions,
and on the inside bottom with birds often accurately
executed: many of those have been recovered in
Nishapur (Wilkinson 1973: 113, 114, 118, nos. 13-15,
24, 27), but many others can be admired in the greatest
museums, both in the East and in the West.
9
Bowl MO103 can be considered a less refined
specimen of the above mentioned type, showing the
potter’s attempt to reproduce the style of the bird with
spreading wings in the inscription, which is now reduced
to a repetition of an incomplete form of the single word
baraka
. Two very close examples attributed to the same
potter are among those identified in Nishapur (Wilkinson
1973: 96, 97, nos. 14, 15) although their provenance is
still uncertain. Another exemplar is in the Sabah
collection (Watson 2004: cat. Ga.11).
Nishapur might be instead the production site of the
small bowl MO98 featuring three radially-positioned
pseudo-inscriptions converging towards a small bird,
maybe a palmiped, in a rest position. Wilkinson
attributes to this production centre both the type of
bird (Wilkinson 1973: 124, 127, nos. 65, 66, 90) and
the style of the script, resting on a continuous line,
which occurs also, and again in radial position, on
another bowl found in Nishapur (
Id.
: 117, no. 23).
The drawing on bowl MO94 is more original, both
with regard to the silhouette of the bird (with its long,
straight tail and trilobed wings) and with reference to the
writing, which a slightly stretched reading might interpret
as a multiple repetition of the formula
li-sāḥibi-hi
, ‘to its
owner’, and of the three letters
lām lām hā’
, that is,
li-
llāh
, ‘to Allah’. The presence of the name of God on a
bowl featuring an incomplete and inaccurate inscription

a Nishapur (Wilkinson 1973: 113, 114, 118, nn. 13-
collezione al-Sabah (Watson 2004: cat. Ga.11).
Nishapur potrebbe essere invece il luogo di
produzione della piccola coppa MO98 sulla quale tre
pseudo-iscrizioni disposte radialmente convergono
